Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Kochi → Munnar
Met at Cochin International and straight up into the Western Ghats. The road climbs past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls and into cardamom country; by the last hour the tea has taken over the hillsides entirely.
Day 2
Munnar
A full day in the tea country. Eravikulam for the Nilgiri tahr, Mattupetty dam and lake, Echo Point, Kundala, and the Tea Museum where they still roll a batch by hand. Top Station if the cloud lifts.
Day 3
Munnar → Thekkady
Down through the hills into spice country. The afternoon is Periyar's: a walk through a working cardamom and pepper plantation with the grower, and the optional lake boat ride before dusk.
Day 4
Thekkady → Alleppey
To the backwaters and aboard the houseboat around midday. The rest of the afternoon is Vembanad — paddy bunds, village landings, fishermen working the Chinese nets — and dinner cooked on board as the light goes.
Day 5
Alleppey → Varkala
The cliffs, Papanasam beach and the promenade.
Day 6
Varkala → Kovalam
Kovalam's beaches and lighthouse, and an unhurried afternoon.
Day 7
Kovalam → Poovar
South to the estuary and the mangrove channels behind it.
Day 8
Poovar → Wayanad
North into the Ghats, with Pookode Lake on the way in.
Day 9
Wayanad
Edakkal Caves, Soochipara falls, Banasura Sagar and the plantations.
Day 10
Wayanad → Kozhikode
Down to the coast and the old spice port — the beach, Kuttichira and Sweet Meat Street.
Day 11
Kozhikode → Kochi
The coast road south to Kochi, with Fort Kochi in the afternoon if time allows, and the airport.
